SP6 Lewis Davis Black was killed on 18 July 1968. SP6 Black was assigned to the 184th Ordnance Battalion (Ammunition), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Section. SP6 Black was participating in the cleanup of the Dong Ha Ammunition Storage Point, Quang Tri Providence, Republic of Vietnam. SP6 Black was killed when a buried improved conventional munitions exploded. SSG James G. Hunt of the 59th Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) was also injured in the accident. SP6 Black received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal posthumously.
Lewis was my father-in-law, Virgil Charles “Chuck” Black’s brother. I have heard stories of him and his brother. He grieves Lewis to this day.
