PVT Jack V. Austin was killed on 26 July 1946. PVT Austin was assigned to 72nd Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad. The 72nd Bomb Disposal Squad was tasked with locating and collecting for disposal all German ordnance in Ammunition Storage Points and munitions caches in the area of Regensburg, Germany. Much of this ammunition was booby-trapped or in very poor condition from improper storage. PVT Austin was unloading an 88mm projectile from a truck loaded with ordnance that has previously been collected, when the projectile exploded in his arms killing him instantly.
