SGT Carl E. Christensen, 1LT Frank E. Smith, Jr., and PFC John Gatti were killed on 17 October 1943. They were assigned to 236th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Company (Provisional) at the time of their deaths. SGT Christensen, 1LT Smith, and PFC Gatti were killed while rendering safe a British bomb, believed to have contained a chemical long delay, tail pistol, anit-withdrawlf feature, near Naples, Italy.
SGT Christensen was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
