1LT Sherwood L. Racey and 2LT Charles F. Hale were killed, and T/5 CPL Robert F. Chapman was seriously injured on 12 October 1944. T/5 CPL Chapman died of his injuries on 21 October 1944. The 133rd and 146th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squads were working together near Besancon, France. The Bomb Disposal Squads were assigned to inspect some captured German ordnance when a new type of fuze was found. While disassembling the fuze for technical intelligence purposes the fuze exploded killing all three.
