SP5 Harry Dewitt McWhinney, Jr. was killed on 25 October 1971. SP5 McWhinney was assigned to the 170th Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), Army Depot Long Binh, Army Support Command Saigon, United States Army, Vietnam, Saigon (today called Ho Chi Minh), Gia Dinh Province, Republic of Vietnam. SP5 McWhinney was killed, while examining a M26 fragmentation hand grenade that had been turned into his unit in Saigon. The grenade exploded for unknown reasons killing him instantly.
