SSG Shane S. Barnard

Staff Sgt. Shane S. Barnard, 38, of Desmet, S.D., died of wounds sustained on 19 May 2010. SSG Barnard was assigned to the 787thOrdnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 3rd Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 71st Ordnance Group (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 20th Support Command (CBRNE).  SSG Barnard died of wounds suffered in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, when he stepped backwards onto a concealed secondary improvised explosive device. SSG Barnard received the Purple Heart Medal posthumously.

 He leaves his wife and three children among others.
