T/SGT William C. Tait

T/SGT William C. Tait was killed on 9 July 1944.  T/SGT Tait was assigned to 6th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad (Separate), Ninth Air Force.  T/SGT Tait was killed when a stockpile of ammunition, mines, and grenades exploded for unknown reasons in Cretteville, France.  T/SGT had been taking inventory of the squad’s collection of unexploded ordnance that had been placed in a slit trench awaiting demolition at the time of the explosion.  

T/SGT Tait was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal. 

The Raws-Tait VFW Post #7334, Somerdale, New Jersey, is named in part for T/SGT Tait.
