SSG Kevin F. Schaefer, 1LT Michael M. Kochon, SFC John R. Wasko, and SP5 Lawrence D. Hermann were killed on 17 March 1983. They were assigned to the 60th Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), Fort Dix, New Jersey. An explosion occurred as the men were preparing to destroy defective fuzes at a demolition range on Fort Dix, New Jersey. After the explosion unexploded detonators from artillery and mortar shells were scattered over a wide area. SP5 Wayne Madsen and SP4 Robert Crespo were injured in the explosion.
