T/5 CPL Donald E. Bailey was killed on 29 October 1944. T/5 CPL Bailey was assigned to 20th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad. The 20th Bomb Disposal Squad was providing bomb disposal support to U.S. Army units that were besieging the city of Aachen, Germany for some time. During this period the 20th Bomb Disposal Squad had been under Germany artillery fire several times a day. During one of these barrages, T/5 CPL Bailey was hit by a piece of shrapnel that passed through his head. T/5 CPL Bailey died shortly after arriving at the field hospital.
