SSG Eric M. Steffeney was killed on 23 February 2005. SSG Steffeney was assigned to the 18th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 192nd Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 52nd Ordnance Group (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 20th Support Command (CBRNE). SSG Steffeney was killed when an improvised explosive device consisting of a 155mm high explosive projectile detonated in Tuz, Iraq. A robot had pulled the detonating cord and from what appeared to be the cap from the projectile. SSG Steffeney approached and picked up the projectile. SSG Steffeney then knelt on both knees. At this point the other team member turned away from watching him for a moment and there was a detonation. It was later determined that there was a 130mm high explosive projectile secondary device underneath the first device. No evidence of a trigger was found.
